Trip to Duck, NC

06/15/2025 by Sherri

There is something unforgettable about watching the sunrise in Duck, North Carolina while staying at the beach with the whole family.

Before the house is fully awake, before coffee is poured and beach towels are scattered across the deck, the ocean quietly begins its morning work. The sky slowly shifts from deep blue to soft pink and gold, and for a few moments, everything feels still in the most sacred way.

Standing there in the Outer Banks, listening to the waves roll in while generations of family sleep under one roof behind me, I am reminded how rare and beautiful these weeks together really are. The laughter around the dinner table, sandy little footprints through the house, grandchildren waking up excited for another beach day, late-night conversations, shared meals, and the simple comfort of all being together in one place for a little while.

It’s never really just about the beach.

It’s about time slowing down enough for connection to happen naturally again.

“From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” — Psalm 113:3

Sunrises in Duck have a way of making you feel small in the best possible sense. They remind you that life moves quickly, children grow, seasons change, and moments like this are gifts to be fully noticed while we have them.

A week at the beach with the whole family is loud, sandy, chaotic, joyful, exhausting, and beautiful all at once.

And somehow, watching the sun rise over the Outer Banks makes every bit of it feel holy.
