A Beach Day in December

12/21/2024 by Sherri

There is something quietly magical about a beach day in December at Sandbridge, Virginia.

The crowds are gone, the air is crisp, and the ocean feels like it belongs only to those willing to meet it in its quieter season. The summer noise has faded, leaving behind wide open stretches of sand, soft winds, and waves that roll in with a deeper, steadier rhythm—as if the ocean itself has slowed down to rest.

Walking along the shoreline in December feels different. The sun sits lower in the sky, casting a softer light across the water. The breeze carries just enough chill to remind you it is winter, but the beauty of the scene warms you in a way that has nothing to do with temperature. It feels peaceful. Reflective. Honest.

There is something about Sandbridge in this season that invites stillness. No urgency. No agenda. Just the sound of waves meeting shore and the simple act of being present in a place that doesn’t ask anything of you except to notice it.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

That verse feels especially close in a place like this. The ocean has a way of putting everything in perspective—reminding us that life moves in seasons, some loud and full, others quiet and reflective. December by the sea feels like the pause between chapters.

And maybe that is what makes it so beautiful.

Not everything has to bloom to be meaningful. Not every season has to be busy to be full. Sometimes grace looks like an empty beach, a cold wind, and the steady sound of waves that have been arriving long before us and will keep arriving long after.

A December beach day at Sandbridge is not about escaping winter.

It is about meeting it with open hands—and finding peace right there in the stillness.
