Learning to Sit Still

09/21/2024 by Sherri

Somewhere along the way, I learned how to stay busy, but not how to be still.

Stillness can feel unfamiliar at first—almost uncomfortable. We are trained to measure our worth by productivity, noise, motion, and output. Even rest can carry guilt. Yet Scripture gently calls us into a different rhythm: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

Learning to sit still is not about doing nothing. It is about being present enough to notice what we’ve been missing—the quiet of morning light, the warmth of a cup held in both hands, the sound of our own thoughts when they finally have space to breathe.

“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15). There is something holy in that invitation—rest not as escape, but as grounding.

In this stillness, I’ve started to understand what the Danish call hygge—a sense of warmth, comfort, and belonging in simple moments. I’ve also found echoes of lagom, the idea of “just enough,” and lykke, the pursuit of everyday happiness. Even the Korean concept of jeong—a deep, lingering emotional connection—feels present in these quiet pauses of life.

Stillness is where life stops demanding and starts revealing.

It reveals what we actually feel, what we actually need, and what we’ve been too busy to hear. “There is a time for everything” (Ecclesiastes 3:1), and stillness is its own sacred season.

I am learning that sitting still is not a retreat from life—it is a return to it.

And in that return, I am finding a different kind of fullness.
