Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

11/10/2024 by Sherri

Fall on Lake Gaston always carries a mix of beauty and goodbye.

As the air turns crisp and the light softens over Pea Hill Creek, everything begins to slow down in a way that feels both peaceful and a little heavy. The boats are pulled in, the dock is quiet, and the boathouse stands still as we go through the familiar rhythm of winterizing—covering, packing, securing, and preparing for a season of rest.

There is something bittersweet about it. This place holds so much life in the warmer months—family gathered on the dock, laughter echoing across the water, boat rides that stretch long into golden evenings. And now, all of it is tucked away, waiting.

It is hard to say goodbye, even knowing it is only for a season.

But there is also a quiet comfort in the rhythm of it all. The lake doesn’t end here. It rests. It renews. And we do the same. We close things up, we step back, and we trust that what has been so full of life will be full again when spring returns.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

This photo of our boathouse and dock holds that tension—the sadness of letting go and the hope of what is coming. It reminds us that endings in one season are often just preparation for new beginnings in another.

So we say goodbye to Lake Gaston for now. We winterize the memories along with the boats. And we hold onto the promise that this stillness is not the end of the story.

Spring will come again. And with it, the water will call us back.
