Past & Future

01/17/2025 by Sherri

There is something especially sweet about remembering my grandson at about a year old—still so small, still discovering the world one curious moment at a time.

In this photo, he’s wearing a little cowboy hat that seems almost too big for him, sitting slightly crooked on his head like it has a mind of its own. And instead of fussing about it, he is completely content—focused on what matters most to him in that moment: a collection of vintage toys gathered around his hands.

There is a beautiful contrast in it all. The old and the new. The past and the future. Those well-loved vintage toys that carried their own history now sitting in the hands of a child just beginning his own story. It feels like generations quietly meeting each other in the middle of play.

And then there is him—soft, joyful, fully present in a way only a one-year-old can be. No hurry. No awareness of time. Just discovery, wonder, and the simple delight of touching, holding, and exploring whatever is in front of him.

It makes me think about how much life is shaped in these early, ordinary moments. Not the big milestones we plan for, but the quiet ones we don’t want to forget. The way he leaned into play. The way he wore that cowboy hat like it belonged to him. The way he was already becoming who he is, even then.

“Children are a heritage from the Lord…” — Psalm 127:3

There is such truth in that verse when I look at him. Not just that he is a gift, but that he carries forward something bigger than himself—love, family, memory, and legacy all woven together in the simplest moments of childhood.

This picture holds all of that for me. A little cowboy hat. Vintage toys. And a tiny boy already full of wonder, living fully in the gift of his beginning.
