There are some songs that instantly transport us to another place. You hear the first few notes and suddenly you’re no longer sitting at your desk, folding laundry, or running errands. Instead, you’re floating peacefully on a lake, soaking up sunshine, laughing with family and friends, and forgetting for a little while about the stress of everyday life.
For me, “Pontoon” by Little Big Town is one of those songs. If you want to take a listen, here’s Little Big Town – Pontoon.
The moment I hear it, I can almost feel the gentle rocking of the water beneath me, the warm summer breeze on my face, and the carefree spirit that comes from spending a day on the lake. The song isn’t just about a boat—it’s about a lifestyle. It’s about slowing down, embracing simple pleasures, and creating unforgettable memories with the people you love.

If you’ve ever dreamed of capturing that same laid-back lake life feeling, the good news is that you don’t need a luxury yacht or an extravagant budget. Whether you own a pontoon boat, have access to a friend’s boat, or simply love spending time near the water, you can recreate the relaxed, joyful atmosphere celebrated in the song.
Why We Love the Pontoon Lifestyle
Life today often feels rushed. Our calendars are packed, our phones never stop buzzing, and there always seems to be one more thing on the to-do list.
A day on the water offers something increasingly rare: permission to slow down.
When you’re floating on a lake, priorities shift. Conversations become deeper. Laughter comes easier. Children splash and play. Grandparents tell stories. Friends reconnect. Suddenly, the most important thing isn’t productivity—it’s presence.

That’s what makes the pontoon lifestyle so appealing.
It’s not really about the boat itself. It’s about togetherness.
Some of my favorite memories involve simple moments spent outdoors with family—watching sunsets, sharing meals, listening to music, and enjoying one another’s company without distractions. Those are the moments that become the stories we tell for years to come.

Dress for Comfort and Summer Fun
One of the things that stands out in lake life culture is the casual, carefree style. A day on the pontoon isn’t about dressing to impress. It’s about dressing for comfort while embracing relaxed summer vibes.
Think easy, breezy, and practical.
Here are a few essentials for creating your own pontoon-inspired look:
- Flowy sundresses or cover-ups
- Comfortable shorts and tank tops
- Lightweight button-down shirts
- Wide-brimmed straw hats
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Comfortable sandals or water shoes
- Swimsuits layered under casual clothing
- Light sweaters or sweatshirts for evening cruises
The key is choosing pieces that allow you to relax and move freely while staying comfortable throughout the day.
And don’t forget the sunscreen. Sun-kissed memories are wonderful; sunburns are not.

Creating the Perfect Pontoon Atmosphere
The true magic of a day on the lake comes from the atmosphere you create.
You don’t need expensive accessories. A few thoughtful touches can transform an ordinary boat ride into a memorable experience.
Create a Great Playlist
Every memorable outing deserves a soundtrack.
Build a playlist filled with songs that make you smile and encourage everyone to sing along. Include favorite country songs, classic summer hits, beach tunes, and meaningful family favorites.
Music has a remarkable way of connecting generations and creating lasting memories.

Pack Simple, Delicious Food
Food always brings people together.
Keep things easy and portable:
- Fresh fruit
- Sandwiches and wraps
- Pasta salad
- Snack trays
- Cheese and crackers
- Homemade cookies
- Chilled beverages
Consider packing food in reusable containers and bringing plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated.
Add Cozy Touches
At Chicks on the Road, we often talk about bringing warmth and coziness—what the Danish call hygge—into everyday life.
Yes, hygge can absolutely happen on a boat.
Bring along:
- Soft outdoor blankets
- Comfortable throw pillows
- Battery-operated lanterns
- Insulated tumblers
- Favorite family games
- A journal for recording memories
As the sun begins to set and temperatures cool, those cozy touches create an atmosphere that invites conversation and connection.
Make Memories, Not Perfection
Social media often shows us carefully curated images of lake life: spotless boats, perfect outfits, and flawless sunsets.
Real life is rarely that polished.
Children spill drinks. Hair gets messy. Someone forgets the ice. The weather changes unexpectedly.
And honestly, that’s part of the charm.
The memories we treasure most usually come from the imperfect moments—the unexpected laughter, the funny mishaps, the spontaneous swims, and the stories retold around future dinner tables.
Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before planning your lake day.
Simply go.

Bringing Hygge to the Water
The older I get, the more I realize that happiness often comes from the simplest experiences.
A peaceful sunset.
A favorite song playing softly in the background.
Grandchildren laughing.
Sharing snacks with friends.
Watching the shoreline drift by.
These moments remind us to slow down and appreciate the beauty already surrounding us.
Perhaps that’s why songs like “Pontoon” resonate with so many people. They remind us that joy doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes joy looks like bare feet, a gentle breeze, good company, and a quiet afternoon on the water.
So this summer, gather your favorite people, pack some snacks, create a playlist, and head to the lake.
You may discover that the pontoon lifestyle isn’t about where you are at all.
It’s about who you’re with and the memories you create together.
And that’s a feeling worth celebrating.
Since this is one of my most favorite things to do in the Summer, I’d love to hear from you! What is your favorite lake memory or must-have item for a perfect day on the water? Share in the comments below.
