Bible Journaling for Beginners: You Don’t Have to be an Artist

11/01/2025 by Sherri

Many people are drawn to Bible journaling but hesitate to begin because they believe they aren’t creative enough. They see beautifully illustrated pages online filled with watercolor florals, intricate lettering, and stunning artwork, and immediately think, “I could never do that.” The truth is that Bible journaling was never intended to be an art competition. It is a spiritual practice designed to help believers engage more deeply with God’s Word.

Bible journaling can be as simple as underlining a verse that speaks to your heart and writing a short prayer in the margin. Some people use colored pencils, stickers, and stamps, while others simply use a pen and notebook. There is no right or wrong way to journal through Scripture. The goal is not to create a masterpiece; the goal is to spend time with God and allow His Word to transform your heart.

One of the greatest benefits of Bible journaling is that it helps us slow down. Rather than rushing through a chapter, we pause and notice specific words, themes, and promises. We ask questions. We write down observations. We record prayers and personal applications. As we do, Scripture becomes more than words on a page—it becomes a conversation between us and God.

If you’re just getting started, all you need is a Bible, a pen, and a willing heart. Choose a short passage of Scripture. Read it several times. Ask yourself what it teaches about God, what it teaches about people, and how it applies to your life today. Write your thoughts in a notebook or directly in your Bible if you are comfortable doing so. Add color if you enjoy it. Draw simple symbols if they help you remember a truth. Or simply write a prayer.

Remember that God isn’t evaluating your artistic skill. He delights in your desire to know Him more deeply. A page filled with simple notes can be just as meaningful as one filled with beautiful artwork because what matters most is the time spent in His presence.

Bible journaling is for everyone—not just artists, calligraphers, or creative personalities. It’s for busy moms, grandparents, students, pastors, and anyone who wants to grow closer to God through His Word. The most beautiful Bible journal page is not the one with the prettiest artwork; it’s the one that reflects a heart seeking after Him.
