Bible Journaling

10/31/2025 by Sherri

There is something deeply meaningful about slowing down long enough to truly engage with God’s Word. In a world filled with notifications, deadlines, and endless distractions, Bible journaling offers a beautiful invitation to linger in Scripture rather than simply reading through it. It is not about creating a perfect work of art or filling a page with beautiful lettering. At its heart, Bible journaling is about creating space to listen, reflect, and respond to what God is teaching you through His Word.

Many people approach the Bible with the best intentions but often find themselves rushing through a reading plan or checking off a daily devotional as another item on their to-do list. Bible journaling encourages a different pace. It invites you to pause over a verse, ask questions, make observations, and record what stands out to you. When pen meets paper, something unique happens. The act of writing helps us slow down and process what we are reading more deeply. We begin to notice words, themes, promises, and truths that might otherwise be overlooked.

Bible journaling also helps transform Scripture from something we merely read into something we personally engage with. Whether you are writing prayers in the margins, highlighting key verses, sketching simple illustrations, or recording personal reflections in a notebook, you are actively interacting with God’s Word. This engagement often leads to greater understanding and stronger retention. Many people find that they remember passages more clearly because they took the time to write, draw, or reflect on them.

Another beautiful aspect of Bible journaling is that it creates a record of your spiritual journey. Months or even years later, you can look back and see how God was working in your life during different seasons. A verse that brought comfort during a difficult time, a prayer that was answered, or a lesson learned through a challenging circumstance becomes preserved on the page. These journaled entries become reminders of God’s faithfulness and evidence of His ongoing work in your life.

Bible journaling can also deepen your relationship with God by turning your study time into a conversation. Rather than simply reading words on a page, you begin responding to them. You may write a prayer, confess a struggle, express gratitude, or record questions you are wrestling with. This practice creates a space where Scripture and prayer naturally come together, helping you grow closer to the One who inspired every word.

Perhaps one of the greatest misconceptions about Bible journaling is that you need to be artistic to do it well. The truth is that Bible journaling is for everyone. Some people fill their pages with watercolor paintings and hand lettering, while others simply underline verses and jot down notes. Both approaches are equally valuable because the purpose is not artistic perfection—it is spiritual connection. God is far more interested in the condition of our hearts than the appearance of our pages.

In a culture that constantly urges us to move faster, Bible journaling offers the gift of slowing down. It allows us to meditate on Scripture, hear God’s voice more clearly, remember His faithfulness, and cultivate a deeper relationship with Him. Whether you are a lifelong believer or just beginning your faith journey, Bible journaling can become a powerful tool for growing in wisdom, strengthening your faith, and discovering the joy of spending intentional time in God’s Word.
