Book Review: The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking

06/29/2026 by Sherri Leave a Comment

When I first picked up The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking in 2018, I had no idea it would change the trajectory of my life.

At the time, I had been following a Danish woman on YouTube who often spoke about decluttering, slowing down, and creating a more intentional life. One day, she introduced the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga), and I was instantly captivated. I immediately sought out Wiking’s book, eager to learn more.

I was sold from the very first pages.

What is Hygge?

Wiking describes hygge as much more than a decorating style or a trend. It is a way of living that embraces coziness, connection, simplicity, gratitude, and finding joy in everyday moments. Hygge isn’t about perfection or expensive possessions. Instead, it’s about creating warmth and meaning in the ordinary moments of life—a candlelit dinner, a cup of tea shared with a friend, a cozy blanket on a rainy afternoon, or laughter around the family table.

This book beautifully connects the ideas of beauty and simplicity in the mundane.

How This Book Changed My Life

Since reading this book, I have found myself continually craving more simplicity, more coziness, and ultimately, more happiness.

After losing my job in 2024, the principles of hygge became even more important to me. What initially began as an interest evolved into a guiding philosophy. My husband and I have intentionally tried to carve out a simpler, more meaningful lifestyle centered around the values of hygge.

It isn’t always easy—especially with nine beloved grandchildren who bring both incredible joy and delightful chaos into our lives! Yet even amidst the busyness, hygge reminds me that perfection isn’t the goal. Presence is.

Looking back, I realize that I had already been practicing elements of hygge long before I knew the word. I loved creating elaborate picnics using china dishes at local vineyards, on our pontoon boat, and even in our own backyard. This book simply gave language and purpose to something my heart had always longed for: creating beauty, warmth, and connection in everyday life.

What I Loved About This Book

  • Accessible and practical. Wiking provides simple ideas anyone can incorporate into daily life.
  • Research-based yet inviting. As CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, Wiking combines research with personal stories and Danish traditions.
  • Beautifully designed. The book itself feels cozy, featuring charming illustrations and inviting photography.
  • Encourages intentional living. Rather than promoting consumerism, the book encourages readers to slow down and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Final Thoughts

The Little Book of Hygge is one of those rare books that doesn’t simply entertain—it transforms. Years after first reading it, its lessons continue to influence how I create home, celebrate family, and seek joy in everyday moments.

If you are longing for a slower, more intentional, and more meaningful life, this little book may just change your life, too.

Inspired by the principles of hygge, I have also created several journals and books designed to help readers slow down, embrace creativity, and cultivate a more intentional life. After all, happiness is often found not in the extraordinary, but in the beautifully ordinary moments of everyday life.

Even dogs can hygge! Here our boxer, Beatrice (right), dines with her sweetheart, Rascal.

Have you discovered hygge in your own life? I’d love to hear about your favorite cozy rituals in the comments below.
