9 Sauce Day Essentials for Making & Canning Homemade Tomato Sauce

Before You Shop…

Family Tomato Sauce Day Series

What began with an 11-gallon bag of tomatoes became our first family Sauce Day—and perhaps the beginning of a new tradition. Follow the full story:

  1. Part 1: Starting a New Family Tradition
  2. Part 2: What You’ll Need Before the Tomatoes Hit the Pot
  3. Part 3: The Work Is the Tradition

Sauce Day doesn’t require a kitchen full of fancy equipment. In fact, some of the best tools are the simple ones—the things that keep the tomatoes moving, the counters a little less messy, and everyone in the kitchen enjoying the day instead of hunting for something they forgot.

Because the easier the work becomes, the more time there is for the part we really love—the talking, laughing, tasting, helping, and eventually standing back to admire those beautiful jars lined up on the counter.

From the Porch

The canner, the jars, the cutting board, the old-fashioned food mill—they’re just tools.

What makes Sauce Day worth remembering is what happens around them.

It’s the kitchen getting warmer as the sauce simmers. The pile of tomatoes that somehow never seems to get smaller. Someone washing while someone else chops. The laughter that comes when things get a little messy. And, eventually, that satisfying row of jars cooling on the counter.

Having the right tools simply gives us a little more room to enjoy all of it.

Because years from now, no one is going to remember which ladle we used.

They’ll remember who was standing beside us.

And that’s really what Sauce Day is about.

We aren’t just filling the pantry. We’re making a memory worth keeping.

Happy Sauce Day!
