Top 10 Things to Pack for Your Lake Vacation!

06/23/2026 by Sherri Leave a Comment

Our family has been a lake family since 1987, and over the years we’ve made countless memories on the water. What started as family vacations eventually grew into owning our own lake home—complete with two boats, kayaks, paddle boats, knee boards, and just about every lake toy imaginable!

After nearly four decades of lake living, you would think I’d have packing down to a science. But somehow, I still find myself packing way too many clothes and then wearing the same two or three outfits all week long. (Please tell me I’m not the only one!)

And if you know me, you know I don’t exactly travel light. There have been more than a few occasions when I’ve packed china dishes, silverware, candles, and even candelabras so we could enjoy a beautiful dinner—or an unforgettable breakfast—on the pontoon boat. Because honestly, everything feels a little more magical when you’re dining on the water.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about what truly makes a lake vacation enjoyable. Here are my top 10 must-pack essentials for the perfect lake getaway.

1. Comfortable Layers

Lake weather can change quickly. Mornings and evenings are often cool, even in summer, so pack lightweight layers like sweatshirts, flannels, and cozy cardigans.

2. Swimsuits (Yes, More Than One!)

Nothing is worse than putting on a damp swimsuit. Bring at least two so you always have a dry one ready for swimming, kayaking, or lounging by the dock.

3. Sunscreen and Bug Spray

Sunny days and evenings around the campfire are part of the lake experience—but so are mosquitoes! Protect your skin with sunscreen and keep the bugs away with a reliable insect repellent.

4. Water Shoes or Sandals

Rocky shorelines, slippery docks, and boat ramps can be tough on bare feet. A good pair of water shoes or sturdy sandals will keep you comfortable and safe.

5. A Good Book (or Three)

Lake vacations practically beg for leisurely afternoons spent reading in a hammock or on the porch. Bring that novel you’ve been wanting to read all year.

6. Outdoor Games

Cornhole, cards, frisbee, paddleball, and board games make wonderful memories with family and friends. Don’t forget something fun for rainy days, too!

7. Reusable Water Bottles

Spending time outdoors means staying hydrated. Bring reusable water bottles for everyone in your group to keep cold drinks close at hand.

8. Camera or Smartphone for Photos

The sunsets, wildlife, and family moments deserve to be captured. Be sure to leave extra storage space on your phone—or pack a camera if photography is your hobby.

9. Cozy Blankets

Evenings by the firepit are one of the best parts of a lake getaway. Soft blankets make stargazing and storytelling around the campfire even more enjoyable.

10. A Spirit of Adventure

The most important thing you can bring on any vacation is a willingness to slow down, unplug, and embrace simple moments. Watch the sunrise, listen to the loons, take an afternoon nap, and savor the peaceful pace of lake life.

Final Thoughts

Lake vacations aren’t about rushing from one activity to the next—they’re about reconnecting with nature, family, and yourself. Pack thoughtfully, leave room for spontaneity, and get ready to make memories that will last long after you’ve returned home.
