Our blue Chevrolet Caprice Estate Wagon wasn’t simply transportation.

It was the family headquarters on wheels.

The tailgate became a picnic table for Fall entertaining.

The cargo area became storage for folding chairs, blankets, and enough snacks to feed an army.

The roof carried bicycles, Christmas trees, and dreams of weekend adventures.

And then there was the rear-facing jump seat.

If you grew up riding in one, you already know.

It was the best seat in the entire car.

You waved at strangers through the back window.

You made silly faces at the drivers behind you.

You watched the world disappear down the road instead of rushing toward it.

For a child, it felt like riding in your own little observation car.

Today, tailgating can look like a professionally designed outdoor living room.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with any of that.

But some of my favorite memories are much simpler.

A football tossed between cousins while someone yelled that lunch was ready.

No one was trying to impress anyone.

We were simply happy to be together.
